How to Clean Invisalign

If you have just finished your Invisalign treatment, your retainers are now working hard to keep your smile in the right place. But what many people are not aware of is this, if you’re not properly caring for your retainers, you may actually be placing bacteria back on your teeth each and every day.

Our patients ask this question quite often: “How to clean invisalign retainers without damaging them?”

Let’s go over this in this blog by our experts, so you can properly clean your retainers, making them fresh, clean and safe to wear.

Why Cleaning Your Retainers Matters

You need to think about what happens to your mouth every night. While you’re sleeping, germs accumulate in your mouth. Every time you wear your retainers, they are fitted tightly around your teeth. This traps anything that gets left behind in your mouth, including plaque, food bits and germs.

If your retainers are not cleaned properly, it doesn’t just collect germs on your retainer. It will go right back onto your teeth.

This can cause:

  • Very Bad breath that doesn’t go away
  • Yellowed or cloudy retainers
  • Irritated gums
  • There are more chances for getting cavities

A clean retainer is not just for the look; it is for your oral health.

How Often Should You Clean Invisalign Retainers?

The simple answer is, twice a day.

  • In the morning (after having worn them overnight)
  • At night (before putting them in again)

This will avoid bacteria from collecting and your retainers will stay clean and fresh-looking.

What You Can Use to Clean Your Retainers

You don’t need anything complicated. Simple is better.

  • Use cold or warm water with a mild soap
  • Soft-bristle toothbrush
  • Mouthwash can be used occasionally

For deeper cleaning, you need to use:

  • Retainer-safe cleaning tablets, Efferdent or Polydent. These tablets dissolve buildup without harming your plastic.

What You Should Avoid

Some methods are not only ineffective, they are counterproductive.

What to avoid:

  • Toothpaste
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Vinegar, especially undiluted ones
  • Hot water

Why to avoid them:

Toothpaste may not be as damaging as other stuff used for cleaning, but it is still gritty. This means that over time, your retainers will have scratches and can be damaging. These are the perfect hiding places for germs.

Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar are not suitable. These are too harsh on your retainers. Not only will they be damaged, but they will have a strong taste or smell.

Hot water is a big no-no. Your Invisalign retainers are made of plastic. Heat will warp them. This means that they will not fit correctly.

When to Do a Deep Clean

This means that even when you clean your retainers daily, you can still have a buildup on them. This is when retainer cleaning tablets come in.

For a deeper clean:

  • Fill a container with water
  • Add a retainer cleaning tablet
  • Soak your retainer as directed

Retainer cleaning tablets do most of the work for you. These tablets help remove stains, odors and hidden buildup on your retainer.

How to Tell If Your Retainer Is Not Clean

Your retainers will show signs if something’s off.

You need to watch out for

  • Yellow or brown discoloration
  • Cloudy appearance
  • Unpleasant smell
  • Slimy or rough texture

A clean retainer should be clear and smooth. If you notice any changes in your retainers, it is probably an indication that your cleaning process needs improvement.

Storage Tips Most People Overlook

Cleaning them, of course, is just half of the battle. The other half, which you should not overlook, is how you store it.

  • Always store them inside a case when not in use
  • Avoid storing them near a source of heat ex. your car’s dashboard is a source of heat
  • Don’t put inside tissues, as you might accidentally throw them away
  • You should not store them where your pets might access them, as they love chewing them

When storing them inside a container, make sure they are completely dry first, as storing them while wet might result in the growth of molds, which, of course, you do not want anywhere near your teeth.

What Happens If You Don’t Clean Them?

And if you skip cleaning your retainers, it is not just your retainers that will be negatively impacted. It is your whole mouth that will be impacted.

Here is what will happen to your mouth if your retainers are not cleaned:

  • Bacteria will build up on your teeth
  • You will have persistent bad breath
  • Your gums will swell, become irritated, or bleed
  • You will have a higher chance of getting a cavity

A Simple Habit That Makes a Big Difference

The good news is that cleaning your Invisalign retainers doesn’t have to be complicated or take a lot of time. Once it becomes part of your daily routine, it will become natural to you, just like brushing your teeth.

All it takes is a few minutes in the morning and at night to:

  • Keep your retainers clean and clear
  • Prevent unpleasant odors from forming
  • Keep your teeth and gums healthy
  • And most importantly, to maintain your smile exactly the way it should be.

If you’re ever unsure about your cleaning routine or if something changes with your retainer, it is always best to consult your orthodontist.
